人物の背景

フェリペ4世は1605年、スペイン王フェリペ3世とオーストリア大公女マルガリータ・デ・アウストリアの長男として生まれる。幼少期から厳格なカトリック教育を受け、王位継承者としての地位を確立していた。
彼が即位した1621年、スペイン帝国は広大な領土を支配していたが、その裏には三十年戦争や国内経済の混乱など、多くの課題が横たわっていた。
治世で起きた主要な出来事
三十年戦争に長く関与し、莫大な戦費で国力が疲弊した。1648年の条約でネーデルラントの大半を失い、覇権が揺らいだ。
- カタルーニャ反乱（1640年）
重税と中央集権に反発したカタルーニャ地方が武装蜂起。自治権をめぐる対立が表面化し、内政の不安定さが露呈した。
- ポルトガルの独立（1640年）
同年、ブラガンサ家がポルトガル王位を宣言し独立を回復。60年続いたイベリア同君連合が崩れ、領土は大きく縮小した。
